WEST VALLEY SCHOOLS, AVONDALE
KSS funded a new program to simultaneously implement programs in several school districts in the valley west of Phoenix around the town of Avondale. Phoenix Children’s Hospital was the community partner in this effort. Rather than working with one school district, this implementation focused on schools within several smaller school districts across Avondale and used a community based approach by including other community organizations such as the city parks and recreation department and is integrated as part of the 21st Century Grants Program.
2008-9 Programs

In 2008-9, funding from the Thunderbirds helped fund the implementation in six schools across three districts:

  • Copper King (Pendergast District)
  • Estrella Vista (Littleton District)
  • Littleton (Littleton District)
  • Estrella Mountain (Liberty District)
  • Liberty (Liberty District)
  • Robey (Litchfield)

Over 670 kids participated in the program with some 70% or 500 kids completing 10 miles or more and almost 50% of the kids completing the marathon distance. Over 200 kids completed their last mile at the PF Chang Phoenix Rock and Roll Marathon. Five of the schools in addition held school based award events for the program, each with excellent participation. Cumulatively, the kids walked/ran 24,500 miles.

Family involvement was a key focus in this program. Parents were involved as volunteers in the schools, 19 parents participated in the school award events at the individual schools, and 36 attended the Rock and Roll race event with the kids. Some 70 parents participated in The Families in Training (FIT) program evening sessions on nutrition.

Evaluative results are still pending on the kids cardiovascular fitness as measured by the PACER test and on the self reported behavior changes of parents and families who attended the FIT sessions.
